Northern Action Group Exhibition

Nothern Action Group members are Malcolm Fryer, Chris McLoughlin, Michael Ashcroft, Ian Norris and myself.

Originally formed in the mid 1960's to promote painting from observation, the group was reformed earlier this year. A lively sharing of ideas and regular painting excursions provide valuable practical and critic support.

Below are a few works I have on exhibition with our first show as the new NAG.

Self Portrait as a Teacher 18" x 20" Oil on canvas £900

The artist as a teacher is a strange phenomona. This self portrait was done at a time when at one particular teaching establishment, it was decided that all male teachers should wear ties. Demonstrating painting while wearing a tie is just one of the funniest concepts, something which my students picked up on. One day I arrived in class to the unforgettable sight of all my art students sporting ties in sympathy!

You may detect the slight discomfort I feel trying to fit into this formal role. My academic spectacles happen to be missing a leg.

The mostly hidden writing at the bottom of the painting is my tribute to an outstanding English teacher who lost his job due to unfortunate events on a rugby trip.

Lytham, 3.30 to 5.30 12"x 24" Oil on board £725

This painting was completed during the times stated in the title, over 5 or so sessions. When I first arrived on the scene, it demanded a long thin format. Not having a board of that shape available, I shoved two squares together.

John Hamilton and Norman Long at Wendy Levy

Window Shoppers 30x48 £2250 oil on board SOLD

Here it is. Somehow, without waiting years, I got the opportunity of a 2 man show at Wendy J Levy Contemporary Art in Didsbury, South Manchester. The gallery is best known for championing the work of Liam Spencer. I'm excited to show the pieces I've been working on lately. There are three bodies of work; Large Paintings of Couples Manchester Street Paintings Figurative Works

Old Couple 33x48 £2250 oil on board SOLD

What the Lady Wants 30x48 £2250 oil on board SOLD

Manchester Street Paintings This collection of plein air paintings were mostly done over the Winter months, the most sensible time to stand outside. However, I found that the hoped-for studio works which might have resulted from these on site observations never seemed quite as interesting as battling it out on the street.
