Nothern Action Group members are Malcolm Fryer, Chris McLoughlin, Michael Ashcroft, Ian Norris and myself.
Originally formed in the mid 1960's to promote painting from observation, the group was reformed earlier this year. A lively sharing of ideas and regular painting excursions provide valuable practical and critic support.
Below are a few works I have on exhibition with our first show as the new NAG.
The artist as a teacher is a strange phenomona. This self portrait was done at a time when at one particular teaching establishment, it was decided that all male teachers should wear ties. Demonstrating painting while wearing a tie is just one of the funniest concepts, something which my students picked up on. One day I arrived in class to the unforgettable sight of all my art students sporting ties in sympathy!
You may detect the slight discomfort I feel trying to fit into this formal role. My academic spectacles happen to be missing a leg.
The mostly hidden writing at the bottom of the painting is my tribute to an outstanding English teacher who lost his job due to unfortunate events on a rugby trip.
This painting was completed during the times stated in the title, over 5 or so sessions. When I first arrived on the scene, it demanded a long thin format. Not having a board of that shape available, I shoved two squares together.
